DOOMSDAY FOR THE DECEIVER, the debut album from FLOTSAM & JETSAM, was released on July 4, 1986, after being recorded in just a mere 2 weeks with a paltry $12,000 budget.
In short, it is a bona fide, legendary, thrash masterpiece. And if you’re reading this and thinking “Okay, FLOTSAM & JETSAM…why does that sound familiar?”, the reason is because the bass player for that band would later become Metallica’s new bassist following the tragic and untimely death of Cliff Burton in late 1986.
It is without question, a speed/power/thrash/heavy metal classic that is so steeped in 1986 vibes that we’re actually surprised none of the album was featured on “Stranger Things”.

HAMMERHEAD
Sounds reminiscent of classic Maiden (specifically those first 2albums w/ Paul Di’Anno), only way more thrashed out. A great song about blowjobs, maybe one of the greatest blow job anthems ever. I guess the part at 4:21 sonically represents the feeling of blowing off deep beyond her tonsils and down her throat.
Solid mix and hey, whaddya know? You can actually HEAR Jason’s bass. Ironically, it’s the ONLY “first album” where Jason Newsted’s bass is clearly audible and well produced, a far cry from the other “first album” he was on where the bass is completely and audibly absent.

IRON TEARS
Great riffs and powerful vocals for a debut thrash album in 1986. Not a lot of “high singers” like Erik A.K. in thrash back in the day, but definitely a unique and powerful vocal style.

DESECRATOR
Ugly chord and then…GO!!! Maybe a bit more sophistication in the song writing. The part around the 1:30 mark has a Priest Painkiller vibe to it (although this would have predated that by 4 years).
“Like a helpless plaything,
A powerless victim of lust,
You gambled honor for pleasure,
A wager that cost precious trust…”
FADE TO BLACK
Definitely a shorty at 2 minutes. More straight-ahead metal than thrash really. Heavy, punchy, to the point and in your face.
“You will go down on my command,
Your will is gone, fall by my hand…”
DOOMSDAY FOR THE DECEIVER
A great intro that easily could have been its own stand-alone track yet works perfectly as a “pre-intro” to the intro of the song.
The actual song officially starts around 1:47. An epic tale, clocking in at around 9 minutes, about the final battle between Flotzilla and The Devil…or maybe just a more metal take on Armageddon and WWIII overall.
If you’re not into the high singing, then this may not be your cup of tea, but that doesn’t make it any less metal as fuck.

METALSHOCK
That sounds like some Geoff Tate inspired whistling in the background at the beginning. Definitely gives the intro section a very eerie ambiance.
4:20: Ladies and gentlemen, the brilliant bass genius of Mr. Jason Newsted.
They probably could have left off the very, very end, but for 1986, it works…and it fits…and that was just how things were done back in those days.

SHE TOOK AN AXE
Ahhhh, the story of Lizzy Borden…giving 40 and 41 whacks (respectively) to her mom and her dad, as sayeth the nursery rhyme.
The song has a nice story telling flow to it, regarding the story of Lizzy Borden and the slaughter of her parents by her hands. The part at 4:51 is nothing short of creepy and extremely off putting.

When she saw what she had done,
She gave her father forty-one…”

The joy of acronyms…it was always fascinating whenever a metal band (especially a thrash band) in the 80’s utilized acronyms for song titles. Because almost instantly, the mind would begin to reel: What do they mean? What are they talking about? Is it something dirty? Or naughty? Or evil? Or all of the above? (NOTE: apparently this stands for “Ugly Lying Stinking Wench”).
“Penetration, injection is painless,
Forked tongue flicking about,
A constrictor in the form of a woman,
With such a grip I barely got out,
DER FUHRER
“Der Fuhrer” translates to “The Leader” in German, by the way. A song written about Adolf Hitler, “The Leader” of the National Socialist party in Germany during World War II because “Der Fuhrer” is how the German people addressed him during that time. (Although, I’m guessing they didn’t have much choice in the matter).
The opening chords have a very unsettling, weird tone to them, further adding to the offputting atmosphere regarding the song’s lyrical subject matter (which comes in around 1:51).
WARNING: If you’re easily offended or triggered, just go ahead and skip this one…there’s a few “Zeig Heils” in the lyrics (which roughly translates to “All Hail” in the context of the song but actually translates to “Hail Victory”. See? You learn something new every day). Basically, it’s a story about Hitler’s rise to power in Germany during WWII.
BTW, What’s that sound at the very end of the song? Maybe the sound of Adolf dying? Or his whore wife Eva Braun blowing him in the bunker before they both “Epsteined” themselves? The world may never know…

FLOTZILLA
Closing things out with an instrumental, a rather intensely epic, progressive one at that. Kind of a shame the Metallica guys didn’t utilize more of Jason’s ideas OR give him THIS particular bass mix on AJFA like they know they should have.
