May 17, 2024, marks the day that KERRY KING released the diabolically brutal debut, FROM HELL I RISE, forging a new chapter in thrash metal.
And before you get all “skeptical” about it and start in with some snide remark like “Oh, this is just diet Slayer…”, understand that this is definitely NOT Slayer (although, it kinda is…even though it’s “allegedly” not).

Make no mistake, KERRY KING is not just that bald, tattooed dude from Slayer with some random backup band.
In fact, KERRY KING is a legitimate thrash super group with an all-star line-up featuring members of Death Angel, Vio-Lence, and (of course) Slayer.
And for a debut solo album, FROM HELL I RISE is an absolute scorcher.
In short, “it’s huge and big…it’s bigger than huge”, and if you like Slayer and/or Vio-Lence and/or Death Angel on ANY level, you are really going to enjoy this album.
Time to break out your “Jean-Claude Van Damme banned band bandana” as we unveil what the next Doomsicle cover will be (and who’s gonna “dress up as Peter Criss”). Find out who 100% “allegedly” has a beef with E.T. (and will NOT be phoning home), stay away from that stuff that “beads up” and “starts getting gritty after a few whacks” and JOIN US for a trip into the aggro-thrash inferno of FROM HELL I RISE.
DIABLO:
Decent intro music (for a live show), but it seems to be lacking in spice and evil. Kinda generic sounding. They could have just left it off…
WHERE I REIGN:
…and opened the album with THIS instead!
A much bolder way to open. It’s like Repentless but with Mark Osegueda. Phil Demmel’s solos add a bit of the old school, Vio-Lence vibe to it. It’s like experiencing the greatest family reunion in thrash: Death Angel, Vio-Lence, AND Slayer. The double bass on the outro is killer. More of that please.

RESIDUE:
The 2nd single. Very tribal, very heavy, and very dark. Good 2nd track energy (if you count Diablo as “Intro music” (like you’d see at a live show)). Very Slayeresque. Mark even seems to have captured the Tom Araya energy. Actually, if Tom were singing this, it would absolutely be a Slayer song.
Nice double bass at the end. A very dark, heavy groove.

I defied, I won’t become a victim,
I can’t find where liberty goes to die…”
IDLE HANDS:
The first solo Kerry King tune we all heard. A brutal way to start things off (both for the brand and the band) and a fantastic way to start a new chapter in metal. Kerry made an excellent choice selecting Mark to front the band. That Phil guitar solo is killer…especially the way it finishes out with that squealie. There are a lot of old school thrash vibes here…

TROPHIES OF THE TYRANT:
Is this Thunderkiss ’65? (j/k). That first riff (while quite heavy and chugging) is just kinda… mediocre (yawn). The harmony, retro thrash, neo-classical solo flourish is nice. The second riff is better, probably because it finishes with a touch of evil.
There’s a gradual increase in speed near the end, like a momentary heart palpitation. Might have been better had it faded out instead. (Just one man’s opinion.)

The war intensifies…”
CRUCIFIXATION:
Definitely Repentless vibes (Repentless Pt. II?). It feels like Consfearacy energy but with the cross hairs aimed at religion instead of government.
This is fucking RAD! A whole record of this would be awesome! The part going into the solo almost sounds Slayerish…it just needs… (wait for it…right around the 2-minute marker…) …AHHHH, just a splash of some evilocity to darken things up a tad. The isolated drums with the guitars dropping out has a very Sabbath vibe to it. If they don’t play this live, that’s just a straight up tragedy. The creepy, evil harmonies are THE BEST!!!
Phil Demmel adds a lot of style and personality to the sound of this band. He compliments the Kerry King line-up extremely well. Definitely a super group comprised of elite masters of thrash. This ride was well worth it. It’d actually be killer to hear Slayer do this one live.

TENSION:
Dark and creepy, dreadful and heavy. Almost has a strange progressive vibe to it. The chugs in the left channel compliment that opening riff beautifully. The tempo never gets any faster, it just stays in that sort of dark, plodding pace…building tension, but there’s never a release. It’s under 3 minutes and although it feels like it might hit flashpoint at some point…nope.

EVERYTHING I HATE ABOUT YOU:
I suppose this is where the tension (from before) is finally released. Oh yeah, it’s a shawty: at under a minute and a ½.
(Some of us identify with this more than others…the length, that is. Don’t deny the power of a sub-compact…just saying).

Sadistic fantasy,
A vision filled with fury and with spite,
Back against the wall,
My victory: you fall,
You’ll always be the victim in this fight…”
TOXIC:
YES!
You can practically hear Beavis & Butthead screaming with joyous glee at this!!! These are high quality K.K. riffs…and would have sounded right at home on World Painted Blood (think “Beauty Through Order”). More double bass goodness. There’s even a little GHUA in there too…all the good stuff you’d expect.

TWO FISTS:
Definitely a punky vibe. The only album this would really fit on would be Undisputed Attitude. Actually, it seems a little out of place relative to the tone of the rest of the record. This would have made a better B-side/hard-to-find track for the hard-core fans…it doesn’t really belong here (again, one man’s opinion).
Two fists…hahaha, what a perfect song for this podcast.

RAGE:
Intense…ballsy…relentless…like Killdozer on autopilot. This one might be a grower.
“Self-destruction,
Manipulate the masses,
Isolation,
Is everybody’s madness…”
SHRAPNEL:
This has a weird, distant sound to it, like being in the middle of a desert inside a fortress fortified with gun and weapon turrets all around, prepared to destroy any and every approaching enemy invader from all sides.
The opening riff sounds like Black Magic after it’s been run through the Sludgerizor, making it even slower, heavier, and doomier.

And my blade won’t care whose blood is spilled…”
FROM HELL I RISE:
What a killer riff to start off the killer closer. It has a Payback vibe, but it sounds like it would fit well on Christ Illusion.
Demmel really adds some excellent zing in the solo department. The dual leads at the end is a nice touch. Glad to see that K.K. is still as pissed off as always with organized religion. God Bless (that) Kerry King (Band). He (and They) is a blessing!
