After touring a crapload for The Black Album and effectively unloading their classic thrash sound from the 80’s, METALLICA released LOAD in June of 1996 and RELOAD in November of 1997 (same sessions, different loads).
The original intent was for “The Loads” to be released as a double album (aka “One Massive Load”), but since there was concern that so much new material released at once might be “too much to swallow”, potentially overloading fans, LOAD & RELOAD were released separately as two distinct loads, united as one.
While there are lingering hints of The Black Album era across both of “The Loads”, these 2 records sound like absolutely nothing else in the band’s entire catalog.
Loaded up with various sonic experimentations, including 70’s classic rock, country, and even some slight stoner metal style riffs, “The Loads” are definitely a different flavor and texture for that little old thrash band from the Bay Area.
