Sabbat Dreamweaver

Album Dive

One of the key components of classic thrash during the glory years was riffs; namely “how many can you fit into one song?” (sort of the same logic used in many of today’s finer adult motion picture feature presentations).

Sabbat answers that question: ALL of them!! This was new territory for some of us as we weren’t as familiar with Sabbat back in the day and didn’t have access to it (though it if we did, we would have certainly bought it).

Dreamweaver (Reflections of Our Yesterdays): Released May 15, 1989.

Recorded at Sky Trak Studio, in Berlin, Germany.

The Beginning of the End: The perfect classic thrash intro; creepy wind, creepy crows and a creepy dude talking in the background about some super sketchy random stuff. This intro pretty much captures the vibe of the “Dreamweaver” album art.

The Clerical Conspiracy: Definitely has that old school thrash vibe that challenges the often asked but never answered question: How many riffs can YOU fit in ONE thrash song?

Advent of Insanity: Nice creepy acoustic intro with ghost pirate ship sound effects in the background. Generally creepy acoustic intro equals killer riffs coming right behind it.

Do Dark Horses Dream of Nightmares?: that sounds like it’s wrapped up in drug metaphors. Okay WTF is being said at the 2:37 mark!? (That’s a sinister whisper) … Super progressive thrash.

The Best of Enemies: That intro paints a nice audio-visual picture. Very Testament sounding riff there in the middle; niceness. In some strange way, this kind of reminds me of old school Ghost Story (ATL- HAIL!) in some ways. Some of these songs are very much progressive thrash; like an all you can eat buffet of delicious classic Riff Casserole. (It sounds like “The Legacy” and “Hell Awaits” had a wild night together and “Forbidden Evil” filmed it.)

How Have the Mighty Fallen?: Very Amityville Horror kind of opening…with the flies/bees. Definitely classic thrash riffs…the kind that activate the “Riff Laughter” response. Solid mix and production; sometimes that was a challenge due to insufficient budgets or insufficient competence, but this album was produced very well; captured all of the proper thrash dynamics that existed at the crest of the wave of late 80’s thrash metal.

Wildfire: Less progressive, more direct. Be sure to check out the story of Dreamweaver. Killer dual guitar solos harmonized.

Mythistory: The other thing in thrash, besides “how many riffs can you fit in one song?” was “How many opportunities can the lead guitar player take to make riffs out of solos?”.

Happy Never After (Outro): And now we’ll play a jig on our guitars and our lutes, in short: we shall play a jig on our glutes.
