Put your ’83 hat on and travel back to the days of yore when OZZY OSBOURNE was still a relatively new solo artist struggling to bounce back after enduring the tragic and untimely demise of guitarist Randy Rhoads following The Ozzman’s first 2 legendary albums, Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman.

Enter Jake E. Lee, Rhoads’ successor, and the debut of his shred skills on Ozzy’s 3rd studio release, BARK AT THE MOON. While perhaps a departure from those first 2 records with Rhoads, BARK AT THE MOON has a more keyboard centric, pop-oriented sound that left some fans confused, yet it was just another example of OZZY rising from the ashes like a phoenix and reinventing himself once again.

Always remember to never write a song in the “afterglow” that you’ll ultimately grow “So Tired” of. “Slow Down” before being aurally assaulted by some overly emphatic keyboards because it’s time to get “laminated” and take “One Up The B-Side” after you “wash the evil off”.

BARK AT THE MOON:

A great way to open with the new replacement guitarist for the late, great Randy Rhoads. Almost has some thrashy undertones to it.

Be sure to check out the music video, with Ozzy as a mad scientist, werewolf, abominable cat beast creature. As a child, Ozzy was scary, crazy, and unpredictable: all the things that terrify parents into praying that their children won’t be forever corrupted by The Prince of Darkness.

Somewhere, it is written that “Bark at the Moon” was originally coined from something Ozzy had once jokingly said: “Eat shit and bark at the moon.” Classic Ozzy.

“Howling in shadows,

Living in a lunar spell,

He finds his heaven,

Spewing from the mouth of hell…”

YOU’RE NO DIFFERENT:

Keyboards? Sounds like Ozzy doing a weird power ballad in the style of The Beatles.

Then again, it was the 80’s and Ozzy was probably trying to gain female listeners and expand that segment of his audience just like us.

See? We’re no different.

“Everything that I say and do,

In your eyes is always wrong,

Tell me where do I belong in this sick society…”

NOW YOU SEE IT (NOW YOU DON’T):

Okay, this probably would have made a better track 2. I’m guessing this would be dedicated to Tipper Gore, the leader of the Parents Music Resource Center (P.M.R.C.), the rogue band of overly self-righteous parents who were trying to wipe the musical landscape clean of any “unsavory” performers.

Definitely some progressive elements in the music. The strange chorus with the higher vocals almost has a strange, Sabbath vibe to it.

There’s that weird keyboard part again…think of that weird, screechy violin sound from old 80’s horror movies that were used to indicate when the killer was about to end someone…but done with keyboards.

And listen to the outro. Balls? Flaps? Bodge? (“Oh Ozzy…”).

“Now you see it, now you don’t,

Careful of words that get caught in your throat,

Face the music, take it like a man,

Givin’ it to me anyway that you can…”

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL REBEL:

Definitely has an Ultimate Sin vibe to it. Actually, this might have been a better track 2.

It certainly has the sound of what metal was becoming in the early 80’s, like a more mainstream version of NWOBHM.

That guitar solo is a shredder…

“When it’s all boiled down and the days at an end,

I’ll give you no bullshit and I’ll never pretend…”

CENTRE OF ETERNITY:

The nighttime wind, the creepy church bell, and the chanting are the perfect soundtrack for the Prince of Darkness. And then the keyboards come in with a sinister & majestic “Mr. Crowley” sort of vibe…

Strangely, it seems like the song comes in much faster than one would expect based on the speed of the intro; seems like it should have been slower and creepier.

The change around 2:53 is interesting…

The keyboards at the end are way too out front in the mix. But that Don Airey is still a blessin’.

“There’s no secrets and no corruption,

In the centre of infinity,

There’s no limits in nonexistence,

And no beginning to my destiny…”

SO TIRED:

“May I have this dance?”

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with ballads. But HFS…WTF!? Did The Carpenters come in and write this one? Or was Ozzy just trying to cross over into adult contemporary soft rock radio?

If we check the drug tracker for this song, it most likely says “YES TO ALL”.

Listening to this is like willingly experiencing a hangover with none of the fun from the night before and all of the suffering from the morning after. I’m “So Tired” of So Tired.

“And I often sit and wonder why,

You’re not with me tonight,

I stayed at home, remaining true,

While you do what you wanted to do…”

SLOW DOWN:

Okay, at this point, ANYTHING is an improvement over “So Tired”. Sort of sounds like S.A.T.O.

Some of the keyboard parts are just WAY out of place, and way too up front in the mix. And while Don Airey’s keyboarding is legendary and well done (particularly with Sabbath in the 70’s), here it just sounds as awkward and out of place as a hair metal dude at a Slayer show.

The breakdown before the solo is pretty cool. Some of those guitar shapes seem to be a nod back to the faster part of the end of “Black Sabbath” (the song by the band from the album).

“I tried to tell you time and time again,

You know you’ll have to pay the consequence,

Now you’re obsessed with such a pace,

But slow and steady wins the race…”

WAITING FOR DARKNESS:

“Jake E. Lee…a cop on a mission…” (Turn me loose…)

This one is really good. Has a very progressive, darker sound that would gradually emerge over the next few Ozzy albums. Especially that main riff at the beginning. Also sounds like this one would have fit well on “The Ultimate Sin”.

There’s the weird, creepy violin/keyboard sounds again. It’s almost like they used Don Airey as a shield to avoid exposing too much of Jake E. Lee’s talent to the fans. It’s like Jake is sort of buried in the mix and not really allowed to fully shine and truly showcase his talents as Ozzy’s new guitarist.
